Women in Medicine

Women in academic medicine face additional challenges relative to their male colleagues. Nationally, a relatively small proportion of full professors are women (18%), and while the number of women at higher ranks has increased over time, the increase has not kept pace with the number of women graduating from medical schools.  Women are under represented in leadership positions, even after taking into account their small numbers at higher ranks. Several studies have shown that women in academic medicine are paid less than their male colleagues. Finally, attrition is greater for women than for men.

The UA College of Medicine is cognizant of the particular challenges women face in academic medicine, and is proactive in trying to address them. We have been a leader both in researching the issues faced by women and in trying to solve some of these problems. We are committed to creating a climate which will foster the success of both female and male faculty, as evidenced by the programs listed at right.
